MANGALORE: A group of dacoits, armed with sharp-edged weapons and iron rods, stormed the range forest office yard at Hoige Bazaar under Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) police station limits here in the early hours of Tuesday. They took away nearly 1,200 kg of sandalwood billets, estimated to cost Rs. 6 lakh, cash and other valuables, the police said.
The dacoits allegedly assaulted a guard and other employees at the office. B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, said the gang, which was believed to have come in a sports utility vehicle gained entry to the office premises by breaking the compound gate lock. They threatened the guard Ganapathy, jeep driver Mohan and two other employees and took away the billets in gunnysacks.
Cash
The gang allegedly took away cash and a wristwatch belonging to Ganapathy and a gold chain, mobile phone and cash from Mohan, he said. Mr. Dayananda said although personnel at a police check post noted a sports utility vehicle speeding away some time after the incident, they were unable to intercept it. The police authorities here had informed their counterparts in the neighbouring districts and Kerala about the incident and sought their cooperation in this regard, Mr. Dayananda added. A case of dacoity has been registered in Mangalore South police station.
