Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: The pro-UDF service organisations have protested against Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan's statement that not even 30 per cent of the Government employees are working. Chairman of the State Employees' and Teachers' Organisations G. Rajan, in a rejoinder here on Tuesday, said the statement was meant for diverting attention from the Government's failure. He wanted the Government to seek whether the functioning of the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues during the last 11 months was successful. He added that the Chief Minister, who had not so far implemented the decisions taken at a meeting he had with the service organisations last September had no right to talk about efficiency in Government service. If the Government employees and teachers were not working, it went to show that the Government itself was not functioning. The Government cannot evade responsibility, he said. He claimed that the employees were socially committed and there were occasions when they worked even beyond office hours. He asked the Chief Minister to not demoralise an entire section by making such statements. He asked the Government to stop transferring employees on political consideration, discontinue making irresponsible statements and take the employees into its confidence if it wanted to make the service more efficient. NGO Association general secretary Kottathala Mohanan said the Chief Minister's statement was exaggerated and alleged that there was a hidden agenda behind it.
