CHENNAI: The 2007 Dr. Malcolm Adiseshiah Award will be given to Dr. Ramachandra Guha, Bangalore-based social scientist and writer. The annual award was instituted by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust in 2000 for outstanding contribution in the broad area of development studies. Giving details of the 2007 award, H.B.N. Shetty, Executive Officer of the Trust, and Prof.A. Vydhianathan, a Trust member, said at a news conference here on Wednesday that a three-member jury selected Dr. Guha out of a total of 10 nominations received. The award will be presented at a function here on November 21, coinciding with the death anniversary of Malcolm Adiseshiah. The selection panel consisted of T.N. Madan, Professor of Sociology, Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi; Prof. S.K. Rao, Economist and Director-General, Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad; and Rama Melkote, Professor of Political Science, Osmania University.
Enhanced cash prize
Mr. Shetty said the highlight of this year's award was that Dr. Guha would become the first recipient of the enhanced cash prize of Rs.2 lakh, a citation and in addition a further grant of Rs.3 lakh as research support for any project of his choice approved by the Trust within three years. Mr. Shetty noted that Dr. Guha was one of India's best-known historians, an acclaimed scholar in the field of environmental studies and a versatile writer who had authored many books in varied fields of interest.
