Special Correspondent

Rs. 1.16 crores is for back wages from January 1973

NEW DELHI: At the instance of President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt handed over a cheque to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw at the Military Hospital in Wellington (Tamil Nadu) on Wednesday following the Government's decision to provide higher emoluments, to the two former armed forces officers holding honorary ranks of Field Marshal of the Army and Marshal of the Air Force.

The ball for higher material benefits was set rolling by Mr. Kalam after he called on the ailing Field Marshal at the Military Hospital last month.

He spoke to Prime Minister, stressing the need for an improved compensation for Gen. Manekshaw and Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh.

A cheque for Rs. 1.16 crores is for back wages from January 1, 1973.
