NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday suspended Babu Bhai Katara, arrested earlier in the day at the India Gandhi International Airport here on charges, including impersonation, of trying to take a woman and a teenaged boy to Canada on the diplomatic passports of his wife and son. Senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said Mr. Katara, who represents Dahod constituency (ST), was suspended from the party for a conduct unbecoming of a MP and a party leader. He had been served a show cause notice to explain the charges against him. It is understood that the suspension came after party president Rajnath Singh took a serious view of the issue and asked senior leaders to "internally probe'' the matter and get an official version before moving against the MP. After the charges were proved beyond doubt, Mr. Singh gave the green signal for Mr. Katara's suspension. Earlier in the day, party spokesman Prakash Javadekar indicated that Mr. Katara could face expulsion in view of the serious nature of charges. He told newspersons that the party would take tough action against him if the charges were confirmed officially. The Congress on Wednesday alleged that the detention of Mr. Katara showed its "true face and character" and said the matter was fairly serious that requires detailed criminal investigation. "I would like you to appreciate the scope and the magnitude of this. It involves several offences of a very serious nature," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.
