News Analysis
The heading of a report (April 18, 2007) in some editions was "Court directive on unauthorised hoardings". The text was about the Calcutta High Court directing the railway authorities to ensure compliance with Section 144 of the Indian Railway Act that prohibits unauthorised hawking on trains and platforms. The heading should have been "Court directive on unauthorised hawking". (In some editions, it was "`Prevent unauthorised hawking on platforms'".) A sentence in "Upgraded package for five star officers" (April 18, 2007) was: "The Government has upgraded the package for the country's two five star generals Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Air Marshal Arjan Singh `in keeping with the rare honour attached to these ranks,' said an official news release here on Tuesday." It should have been Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh. (He was the first Air Chief Marshal of the Indian Air Force.) The error was in the earlier editions and was corrected. In a PTI report "Kanpur IIT shocked by professor's death" in the shooting incident at the Virginia Tech University, U.S. (Delhi, April 18, 2007, page 12), it was mentioned that Prof. G.V. Loganathan had completed his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1978. He took his M.Tech from IIT Kanpur and his B.E. was from PSG Tech, Coimbatore, in 1976. In a report "No privatisation, says Railway Minister" (April 17, 2007), a sentence was: "Railway Board Chairman J.P. Batra said the Railways achieved the operating ratio of 78.7 per cent, `possibly the highest in any well known railways of the world'." It was an error. It should have been the "lowest". Operating ratio is broadly the quotient of expenditure divided by the earnings. So it is a lower operating ratio that is an indicator of a more efficient railway. The results table in a report "Felipe Massa of Ferrari wins Bahrain GP" ("Sport", April 16, 2007) that listed the team championship points had a few errors. While McLaren's total points are 44 (not 32 as was published), Ferrari's points are 39 (not 23), Renault's 9 (not 8) and Toyota 5 (not 3). The table was updated in the later editions to give these correct figures. In "Corrections and Clarifications" (April 17, 2007), and with reference to a report "Provide affordable treatment for diseases, doctors told" (April 14, 2007), we had said that filaria is a disease. It should have been filariasis. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
