`Students should evaluate their aptitude before choosing a career'

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Over 2,000 students, many of them accompanied by their parents, attended Careersfest-2007, organised by ITFT at a city hotel here on Wednesday. The show was conducted by career counsellor Usha Albuquerque and her associate Sushma Singh.

According to a press release, Ms. Albuquerque said that students who have completed +2 studies should understand their inner strengths and qualities and evaluate their aptitude and interest before finally deciding in choosing a career.

`Right choice'

"They should plan their career options carefully, set a time frame to achieve their goal, and work towards the end with a disciplined mind. Making a right choice when they are on the threshold of their life would save them from unhappiness and disgruntlement, which they might harbour for next 40 or 50 years of their life for their wrong decision, " she added while advising the parents to help their wards in selecting the right career.

She pointed out that in line with global trends the service industry in India was growing rapidly with its contribution of almost 58 per cent to the country's GDP and employing around 45 million people, a figure that is slated to rise to 120 million by 2020.

She said indications were that this growth would get further accelerated not only because of services within India but also because of their increasing export, adding that the service industry had now emerged as the new engine of economic growth and employment generation.

According to her, some of the sunrise segments of the service industry which have a vast potential for job opportunities are travel and tourism, hospitality, retailing, airlines, media and entertainment, healthcare and biotechnology, IT-enabled services, BPOs, telecommunication, banking, insurance and other financial services, sales and marketing, and fitness.
