Exhibition of archives

KOZHIKODE: Nehru Yuva Kendra and the State Archives Department will jointly organise an exhibition of archives and a History seminar in connection with the 150-th anniversary celebrations of the first independence struggle, at Town Hall here on Thursday and Friday.

Mayor M. Bhaskaran will inaugurate the exhibition on Thursday. The message of the Kochi Maharaja to Jawaharlal Nehru (1946), Malabar Commissioner H.S. Green's report on Malabar revenue administration, document on setting up ship transport in Canara coastal area (1822), list of local chieftains and Maharajas who were given `Malikhana' in Malabar province (1837) and Malabar former acting principal collector E.P. Thomson's letter on the importance of repairing and constructing ships in Beypore (1840) are some of the rare documents being exhibited at the two-day event.

Other rare documents include those on slave trade in Wayanad (1843), Strange's report on Malabar revolt (1852) and a letter by Sulthan Ali Raja to W. Dennison on the origin of Arakkal royal dynasty (1862). The visitors to the exhibition could also view a Reuters despatch on First World War (1914). Noted historian Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan will be the moderator of the history seminar on Friday.

Dr. T.P. Sankarankutty Nair will speak on `Travancore and Kochi before 1857,' Dr. Priyadarshanlal on `Malabar before 1857,' and Dr. K.N. Ganesh on `After 1857.'

Elocution, essay writing, quiz and painting contests will also be organised.
