Protesters warned against blocking garbage-laden lorries

Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD: The district administration will not hesitate to take stringent action against those who illegally block lorries carrying garbage from Kasaragod to the dumping yard at Kelugudde in Madhur panchayat limits near the town, District Collector N.A. Krishnan Kutty said here on Wednesday.

Mr. Krishnan Kutty told The Hindu that only a small section of people in the Kelugudde area was involved in the issue and office-bearers of the panchayat had not supported the blockade. "There was an agitation in the area around six months ago and a decision was taken then to implement certain steps to reduce the problems faced by residents of Kelugudde," he said. Of the seven promises made to Kelugudde residents, six had been implemented. The promise to provide clean drinking water by installing three public taps would be implemented and the Kerala Water Authority had been asked to expedite the work, Mr. Krishnan Kutty said.

The water authority had pointed out that the area lacked water resources and the digging of bore wells for extracting water to be supplied through the taps was progressing, he said.

Earlier, the Kasaragod municipality sought the help of the District Collector and the police to dump garbage at Kelugudde. The garbage-laden lorries of the municipality were blocked on Wednesday also.
