BANGALORE: The State Commission for Women has decided to intervene on behalf of a woman who allegedly attempted suicide on Monday, as she was unable to withstand the harassment by an MLA belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Chairperson of the Commission Pramila Nesargi, who visited the woman, Jayalakshmi, recuperating in a city hospital on Wednesday, said the woman had consumed poison after a slanderous article accompanied by obscene photographs of her was published in a Kannada magazine two days ago. Ms. Nesargi said Ms. Jayalakshmi, who had worked a nurse in Honnali, had befriended the MLA, Renukacharya, there. She relocated to Bangalore later, and this week she had complained to the police about Mr. Renukacharya's harassment. The police had refused to lodge a complaint. This was followed by the publication of the obscene photographs and the article, and her attempt to commit suicide. In the next few days, the Commission would try to bail out Ms. Jayalakshmi, she said.
