MYSORE: As part of the programme of village visits by Government officials, launched recently in Mysore district, Chief Secretary P.B. Mahishi on Wednesday sought to lead the way by wielding a spade to mark the beginning of work on removing silt from a lake in Halebeedu village of Hunsur taluk of Wednesday. Mr. Mahishi was accompanied by Principal Secretary of the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj M.R. Srinivas Murthy, who used a crowbar to dig up earth. The work is among 12 projects worth Rs. 2 crore cleared by the Government in the Halebeedu gram panchayat, which comprises seven villages. The other projects include the establishment of a primary health centre in Halebeedu, improvement of electricity supply to villages in the gram panchayat, and construction of a centre for self-help groups. The programme under which officials will have to compulsorily visit villages two days a week was launched by Minister in charge of Mysore district G.T. Deve Gowda with the aim of taking the administrative machinery to the villages to address the problems faced by the people. Mr. Mahishi told over 100 officials of various Government departments in Halebeedu village on Wednesday that the programme aimed to take the Government to the doorstep of the people. "It will be implemented in other parts of the State once its impact has been assessed," he said. He told the officials, who have been instructed to cover every gram panchayat in the district during the next 100 days, to submit detailed reports, which should include the action taken with regard to the representations received from the people. The Government would use the data obtained from the officials to determine whether the programme could be replicated in other parts of the State, he said. He called upon all district-level and taluk-level officialsto take the programme seriously and visit the villages on a priority basis to address the people's problems.
