CREATING AWARENESS: Director-General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development, Kiran Bedi, at the campaign in New Delhi on Wednesday.
NEW DELHI: Greenpeace has launched a signature drive aimed at collecting one million signatures to urge the Union Government to implement a ban on inefficient light bulbs in the country by the year 2021. Attended by several celebrities and eminent citizens, the signature drive in Delhi was flagged off at India Gate on Wednesday morning. Celebrities, including actor Tom Alter, photographer Raghu Rai and Bureau of Police Research and Development director-general Kiran Bedi, signed the petition supporting the demand to phase out inefficient lighting and foster access to efficient alternatives such as Compact Fluorescent Lamp. The State Government had in the past initiated several projects to promote CFL bulbs all of which have failed to reduce the use of incandescent bulbs. In the coming months, citizens will be able to meet Greenpeace activists in different areas of their cities and sign the petition.
