Ernakulam a fertile ground for small industrial units

1,447 units registered during the last financial year

KOCHI : Ernakulam district saw the birth of a large number of micro, small and medium industrial units during the last financial year.

Considering the developments in the industrial clusters, the number of new enterprises registered under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act and the number of self-employment schemes implemented under the PMRY, significant developments took place in the micro-small- medium sector.

During the period, 1,447 new units were registered under the MSMED Act that came into effect in October 2006.

Manager of the Ernakulam District Industries Centre B. Prasanna Kumar said that 3,001 people received bank aid for launching self-employment schemes under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY). Nearly Rs.4 crore was disbursed as State Investment Subsidy to 123 units.

Margin money loans stood at Rs.90 lakh during last year. The year also saw disbursement of Rs.5.56 lakh to 18 industrial units run by women.

One of the major developments in the district during the last financial year was the financial help received by the industrial clusters both from the State and Central Governments.

The Aluva-based Plastic Cluster received Rs.3.15 crore from the Union Government while another Rs.92 lakh was granted by the State. The Kalady Rice Millers' Consortium received Rs.4.27 crore from the Union Government while the State Government granted it Rs.1.47 crore.

The Perumbavoor Plywood Cluster received Rs.2.35 crore from the Union Government while Rs.67.23 lakh was granted by the State Government. The Mahila Apparel Park, Angamaly, received Rs.25 lakh from the State Government as grant.

Another major achievement for the district last year was the publication of a study on the industrial potential of the district. The study was published at the initiative of the Ernakulam District Panchayat.

Reports were also presented on the industries linked 11 departments and institutions including the Cochin Port and the Cochin International Airport.

The green channel and the single-window facility for clearances worked effectively during the last financial year, said Mr. Prasanna Kumar.

He said of the 682 complaints received, 677 were settled through the Green Channel counter. Similarly, 95 of the 99 complaints received were settled through the single-window facility.

The District Industries Centre was also involved in organising 128 seminars to create awareness on entrepreneurship. The centre was able to identify 2,733 potential entrepreneurs through these seminars.

A total of 109 counselling camps for the PMRY beneficiaries were held during the last financial year.
