Charges against cathedral group refuted

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral, Ernakulam, has alleged that the cause of the quarrel with St. Gregorios Orthodox Syrian Church, Elamkulam, is the order issued in March last year raising the latter to the status of an independent parish.

The St. Mary's Cathedral group claimed that the Elamkulam church and its property belonged to the cathedral and that it was handed over to the other group without the permission of the parish general body.

Jacob C. Mathew, trustee, and Babu Mathew, former trustee of the cathedral, demanded that the order raising St. Gregorios Church to the status of a parish should be withdrawn, which they claimed were against the constitution.

They also alleged that the Elamkulam group was spreading misinformation by claiming that St. Gregorios Church was made a parish with the approval of the Episcopal Synod.

They claimed that the reports that some people tried to attack the Bishop of the diocese were not true and were fabricated with malicious intent.
