A monument in a bad shape

Broken bricks of the pillar supporting a cannon that symbolises the era of freedom struggle greet visitors to the famed Mananchira Square in the heart of the city.

Names have been scribbled on the sides of the cannon, which had been installed to honour the valiant who opposed the mighty British Empire. Now miscreants have also desecrated the structure. Street vendors and pushcart vendors have used the little spaces of the pillar to dump waste materials.

Incidentally, the Kozhikode Corporation opened the Mananchira Square recently after closing down for renovation works a few months ago. The square, which forms the Tagore Park, Anzari Park and the Mananchira Pond, is one of the major places for the residents to unwind.

Corporation, it is learnt, had doled out Rs.15 lakh for renovation works but it appears they had failed to take notice of the damage done to the historical piece and repair the beam supporting the cannon.

The cannon originally installed by British soon after the World War I was earlier kept at the office of the Commissioner of Police.
