dated April 20, 1957: London to India by bus

Twenty-one Britons are now on a 10,000-mile bus ride to Calcutta. They left London four days ago in a highly painted single-decker, inaugurating Britain's first bus service to India. The bus, "The Indiaman," proudly displays on its sides the route ahead: Turin, Venice, Belgrade, Istanbul, Tehran, Quetta, Lahore, Delhi, Calcutta. The trip will take five weeks, over some of the world's worst roads. The passengers, 10 men and 11 women, have paid £85 each for the single trip. One wanted to see the Taj Mahal by moonlight. Another wanted to start a school at Lahore.
