NEW DELHI: Japanese auto major Nissaon Thursday launched its luxury sedan Teana in India. Fully imported from Nissan's Kyushu plant in Japan, Teana combines refined, modern design with a smooth, powerful V6 engine. It has superior exterior styling with distinctive chrome grille, high quality headlamps and integrated fog lamps.

Marking Nissan's expansion in the fast growing Indian market, Teana is the Japanese carmaker's second model in India. It had launched sport utility vehicle X-TRAIL in 2004. Priced at Rs. 20.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), Teana is powered by a 2.3-litre petrol engine and has a four speed automatic transmission.

Sales target

Teana will be available in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The company plans to expand its dealership network. The company has set a modest sales target of 350 in the first year of the launch.

"Our research showed that the Indian customers' expectation of a luxury vehicle matches what Teana offers. We are confident that the Nissan Teana will meet the demand of the Indian customers and that the people here will love this sedan,'' Nissan Motor India Managing Director Yoshie Motohiro said at the launch ceremony.

Nissan is also planning to enter the compact and small car segment where the competition is intense.

Last month, Nissan had announced its intention to set up a manufacturing facility in Chennai together with alliance partners Renault and local manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M).

"As the plant in Chennai is likely to become operational in the second half of 2009, we have enough time to do our planning. To be competitive in India, we have to have a presence in the compact and small car segment. We are keen to enter the volume and low price segment,'' Ms. Motohiro said.
