"EARTH DAY SPECIAL": Programme on the deteriorating state of the planet goes on the air on Sunday.
Reflecting the changing face of Planet Earth is a new programme on National Geographic Channel titled "Earth Day Special" that will be aired this coming Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight. Exploring the planet, it will feature thought-provoking episodes covering a wide range of topics that present not only the current deteriorating state of our planet and what awaits us in future but also what corrective actions are being taken to save it. Speaking about the "Earth Day Special", National Geographic Channel senior vice-president-programming (India) Joy Bhattacharjya says the channel is guided by the National Geographic Society's commitment to exploration, conservation and education. "It is our constant endeavour to stay relevant and relatable to the world we live in. Through our Earth Day special programming we hope to reach out to our viewers and make them re-think about the way we treat our fragile planet and inspire them to act." Pointing out that the rapid changes taking place in our planet are an area of concern, Mr. Bhattacharjya says each one of us has the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment. "Our endeavour is to raise awareness about important environmental issues and motivate viewers to find ways to help our planet," he adds. Besides a selection of special environmental episodes, some insightful films like Jean-Michael Cousteau's "Ocean Adventures" will also be screened. While "The One Degree Factor" will look at the impact of global warming on our planet, "Troubled Waters" takes a look at the problems and remedies related to toxic water bodies. "Strange Days on Planet Earth" will also be telecast. With haunting images like devastating floods, raging tsunamis and deadly droughts, the programme makes viewers think about their association with Mother Earth and how to co-exist with some of its most intriguing creatures.
Eminent personalities
"Special Earth Day" vignettes featuring eminent Indian personalities to spread awareness about the dangers posing the earth will also be showcased. In addition, the channel has created a dedicated Earth Day micro-site that will include a user-generated video and photography site. This technology allows visitors to share clips and pictures of conservation activity. Some of the episodes featured in the 14-part programme include "Invaders'', "Predators'', "Troubled Waters'', "America's Underwater Treasures'' and "Voyage to Kure''. -- Madhur Tankha
