KANNUR: Chalad and nearby areas here that witnessed clashes between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Congress workers continued to be tense on Thursday. The office of the Pallikkunnu panchayat ruled by the Congress-led United Democratic Front was damaged in an explosion, suspected to crackers. The Congress alleged that CPI(M) workers exploded country bomb in the panchayat office compound in a bid to terrorise the people in the region. It may be recalled that panchayat president P.K. Rakesh was one of the accused in the attack by suspected Congress workers on the house of a relative of a CPI(M) worker. Glass panes of the panchayat office were shattered in the explosion. A few of the nearby houses also reportedly suffered minor damage in the incident. The police, however, said that the glass panes of the panchayat office and nearby houses shattered in the impact of the bursting of crackers by a group of youngsters on a plot near the panchayat office.
