NEW DELHI: Leela Ponappa, the former Ambassador to The Netherlands and Thailand, has been appointed Deputy National Security Adviser for a two-year term. The post has been vacant since Vijay Nambiar left to join the United Nations. An official announcement from the Home Ministry on Thursday stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet took the decision to appoint Ms. Ponappa to the post. She will also function as Secretary, National Security Council Secretariat. A 1970 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Ms. Ponappa has worked as Joint Secretary/Additional Secretary handling Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar in the External Affairs Ministry from August 1992 to January 1995 and again from March 1998 to August 2001. She retired from service as envoy to The Netherlands last year.
