Corrections and Clarifications

The heading of a box item accompanying a story — on the shootings at Virginia Tech University, U.S. ("Embassy staff meet Indian students", April 19, 2007, page 1) — was "Cho's behaviour was bizarre". Though it was a box in an item on the killings in the U.S and had a Blacksburg dateline, a number of readers thought it was about journalist and editor Cho Ramaswamy. They felt that the heading could have been different and say "Gunman's behaviour was bizarre" would have been more apt. The heading has to be seen in relation to the content and the dateline.

In "This Day That Age — from the pages of The Hindu dated April 19, 1957" and under the subheading "Average age of Ministers" (April 19, 2007) the age of Jagjivan Ram was given as 59. It was an error. It should have been 49. (Jagjivan Ram was born on April 5, 1908 and his centenary will be celebrated next year.)

The third paragraph in "Upgraded package for five star generals" (April 18, 2007) was: "All service chiefs are of four star rank and only Field Marshal Manekshaw and Marshal of the Air Force [Arjan] Singh were conferred the honorary ranks equivalent to five star generals after retirement." The name of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa had been left out.

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
