KOZHIKODE: The Students Federation of India (SFI) has said it will stage protests against the alleged anomalies in the appointment of teachers in Government Medical Colleges in the State. The SFI said the Government should immediately intervene in the matter. Talking to mediapersons here on Thursday, M. Sajish, convener of the SFI Kerala State Medical Sub-Committee; P.V. Arun, joint convener; S.K. Sajish, district president; and Joseph C. Sunny, district secretariat member; said the appointments would affect the quality of medical education. The SFI said it would oppose the reported move to appoint 16 teachers without the MBBS degree, which was the basic qualification required for appointment in the Department of Anatomy in the Government Medical Colleges in Kerala. The SFI said it would resort to agitations in front of the medical colleges and medical offices on April 20. On April 22, it would organise an agitation in front of the office of the Director of Medical Education (DME), Thiruvananthapuram. The appointments were made on the basis of a selection made by the Public Service Commission (PSC) on the premise that that 30 per cent of posts in the Department of Anatomy could be filled from among M.Sc. graduates in case there were no candidates with the MBBS degree as per a 1975 law. The Kerala Government had made the selection in 2004, under the cover of the above law. An examination was conducted and a rank list of 28 applicants prepared. The SFI had protested against the move. The organisation had withdrawn its agitations after an undertaking given by the Government that it would not post the M.Sc. graduates. Petitions had also been filed in court against the appointments. The court had directed the Government to reconsider its decision, the SFI leaders said. They alleged that the DME had reported the matter to the PSC only on November 15, while the list of MBBS applicants had lapsed on November 30. The SFI alleged that the appointments of M.Sc. graduates were being made with a view to benefit certain persons.
