Naidu invited to US

HYDERABAD: A delegation of the American Telugu Association, including its president Gavva Chandra Reddy, on Thursday invited TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu to visit Indianapolis in the US. They urged him to visit their place and take a look at how the farming community was doing there. - Special Correspondent

Scam: BJP demand

HYDERABAD: The BJP has asked the Government to reveal the big names disclosed by Sarasa Devi as being linked to the DPEP scam. The party on Thursday alleged that some of these big names might be officers in the CMO. It sought to know as to how much out of the education cess used for SSA had gone into pockets of officials and others. - Special Correspondent

CGM for NABARD

HYDERABAD: Aluru Sambasiva Rao on Thursday took over as Chief General Manager (CGM), Andhra Pradesh, NABARD, from V. Ramakrishna Rao who has been relocated to its regional office in Chandigarh. Mr. Rao had worked as General Manager in Hyderabad before. - Special Correspondent

MLC flays TDP

HYDERABAD: B. Radhakrishnaiah, MLC and president of Andhra Pradesh Trade Union of Beedi Employees, on Thursday urged political parties not to create a fuss about the danger mark on beedi packs. He said the TDP and the NDA, which were in power when the WHO circulated the logo to be published on beedi packs, had not resented it then but now were raising a hue and cry over the issue. - Special Correspondent

Lightning kills one

NANDYAL: Lightning struck one person dead and injured four others at Nandyal on Thursday. A group of persons who organised a community lunch after offering prayer to goddess Gangamma was homebound when the thunderbolt struck. The victim was identified as Chinna Eeranna (25). - Special Correspondent

7 cm rain in Kuppam

HYDERABAD: Kuppam in Chittoor district recorded 7 cm rainfall as rain lashed many parts of the State on Thursday under the influence of upper air trough. Kamareddy recorded 4 cm, Golconda 3 cm, Rapur and Sattenapalli 2 cm each. The highest day temperature of 39 degree Celsius was recorded by Anantapur and Nandyal. - Special Correspondent

Beedi workers stage dharna

KADAPA: Beedi workers staged dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday demanding withdrawal of G.O. 297 stipulating printing of danger sign on beedi rolls.

The GO would adversely affect beedi sales and would jeopardise interests of 12 lakh beedi workers in the State, Beedi Workers Union district president Chinnubhai and secretary Mahabub Basha alleged.

The Central and State Government decisions were harming beedi industry with a view to promote interests of multi-national companies, they alleged.

They demanded issue of identity cards, provident fund facility, housing and pension for beedi workers. Awaaz district secretary S. Maqbul Basha expressed support. - Staff Reporter

Relief to pomegranate ryots

ANANTAPUR: The State Government has announced a scheme to revive the pomegranate orchards damaged by bacteria attack by extending assistance in the form of pesticides and fertilisers. Assistant Director of Horticulture Y. Vidya Shankar said on Thursday that crop (fruit) damaged more than 50 per cent and branches damaged more than 10 per cent with bacteria attack would be considered for assistance. Small and marginal farmers would get 50 pc of expenditure for pest control measures or Rs. 22,500 per hectare, whichever was lesser, and others would get lesser of the 30 pc of expenditure or Rs. 13,500 per ha. - Staff Reporter

NCC camp for shooters

ANANTAPUR: Six Andhra Girls battalion of NCC here has asked the boy and girl cadets with sharp shooting skills to compete for the selection of unit team for participation in All India Thal Sena camp and All India Mavalankar Shooting Competition.

Interested cadets are required to report at the NCC office here on April 23 for a trial shoot with .22 rifle, according to Commanding Officer Lt. Col. J.S. Thakur.

Cadets with skills in playing harmonium, tabla, guitar, flute and sitar can also participate in inter-district cultural competition to be held at Kurnool in June first week. - Staff Reporter

Plea for compensation

ANANTAPUR: District Horticulture Farmers Union affiliated to Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham of CPI (M) has urged the Government to extend compensation to horticulture farmers who had suffered heavy loss due to gales and hailstorms on April 12, 13 and 17 in different parts of the district.

President of the union V. Shiva Reddy said mango, papaya, banana crops were badly damaged in Chillavaripalli of Tadimarri mandal, Eddulapalli, Ramagiri Diguva thanda and Gutti Basinepalli of Pamidi, Tarimela, Korivipalli, Gummepalli of Singanamala and several villages of Kalyanadurg mandal in gales and hailstorms. - Staff Reporter
