New initiatives by NCERT

It will also develop manuals for teachers

NEW DELHI: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced some new programmes for children and teachers, including the establishment of a reading development cell.

As part of a series of reforms in childhood education and teacher education, the ongoing programme of "early childhood education" by the NCERT will now be expanded to the five regional institutes of education (RIEs) at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore and Shillong. Nearly 30,000 teachers will undergo an orientation programme on how to use the textbooks of Classes II, IV, VII, X and XII through tele-conferencing with the help of EDUSAT, according to an NCERT release.

In pursuance of the recommendations of a committee set up by the NCERT to review the programmes of the RIEs, the committee has recommended replacement of the existing two-year B. Ed. programme with a one-year course followed by a long duration internship, it said. The Council has also set up a reading development cell to help children explore and process information that would develop their interest in reading. The cell will select, procure and develop new, innovative and interesting study material for children studying in Classes I and II and orient the teachers in reading pedagogy. It will also develop manuals for teachers and set up reading corners in schools.

Regarding the enhancement of elementary education, the NCERT's Department of Elementary Education has undertaken programmes such as making video spots to sensitise stakeholders about their role in improving the quality of elementary education. The department is also conducting a study to find the factors associated with "low achievement level" among children belonging to the Scheduled Castes at the upper primary stage. The NCERT has also taken steps to use information technology in school education.
