Sabarimala master plan approved

Thiruvananthapuram: The representatives of the Travancore Devaswom Board and the Ecosmart in the presence of Minister for Devaswoms G. Sudhakaran on Thursday approved the Sabarimala master plan after detailed discussions. It was done after clearing the reservations which the board had over proposals such as the base camp at Nilakkal, parking facilities at hill top, the queue complex, dismantling of the old building at Sabarimala and an alternative to the flyover. It is to be implemented over a period of 50 years. — Special Correspondent

Move to revise building tax

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government is thinking of revising the building tax in order to increase the State's revenue. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said here on Thursday that the revision would cover apartments and shopping complexes. The Minister added that a committee had been asked to identify the sections in the law that had to be amended and to make recommendations relevant to the issue. — Special Correspondent

Procurement delay: loss is Rs.81.55 lakh

ALAPPUZHA: Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran, who visited Kuttanad on Wednesday, admitted that farmers here had suffered loss to the extent of Rs.81.55 lakh due to the delay in procurement of the harvested crop. Mr. Ratnakaran, who interacted with farmers near Mankombu, however, countered Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar's statement on Sunday that the farmers had suffered a damage of nearly 25 per cent, saying that the damage was only 1 per cent of the total paddy harvested this year. — Staff Reporter

Bail granted to lawyer

Kochi: The Kerala High Court at a special sitting held on Thursday granted bail to High Court lawyer Haridas P. Nair who had been remanded to judicial custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate in Chitoor in connection with the escape of an accused from police custody. Justice K.T. Sankaran issued the bail order on a petition filed on behalf of the lawyer. The court also transferred the case filed against the lawyer from the Chitoor Magistrate Court to the Palakkad Judicial Magistrate Court. — Staff Reporter

Workshop on marketing

KOLLAM: S. Suresh Kumar, Chief General Manager of the Indian Rare Earths, will inaugurate workshop on `new marketing landscape' here on Saturday. The workshop is being organised by the University of Kerala's Institute of Management in Kerala (IMK), Kollam, in association with the Quilon Management Association. Director of the IMK, University of Kerala J. Rajan will preside over the function.

Annual day celebrations

KOLLAM: The 40th annual day celebrations of the Mundakkal Arts and Sports Club will be held on Friday. It will be inaugurated by Fisheries Minister S. Sarma. On the occasion, P. Rajendran, MP, will inaugurate a career guidance centre to be managed by the club. The CD library of the club will be inaugurated by KPCC general secretary Kodikunnil Suresh. Mayor N. Padmalochanan will distribute the prizes. Club president R. Rajmohan will preside. — Staff Reporter

Body exhumed

THRISSUR: Officials led by the Revenue Divisional Officer exhumed the body of a tribesman at a colony in Anappantham forest, near here, on Thursday. The body was handed over to relatives after a post mortem examination at the Government Medical College Hospital at Mulankunnathukavu. The body of Murali, 35, was found with bullet injuries on April 6. It was buried on April 7. Relatives told the police that Murali had committed suicide. The colony is deep in the forest and the incident was known to the outside world only recently.
