THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has no intention to allow private sector participation in the production-related activities of Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML), Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said. In a release here on Thursday, he said he was clarifying the position in the context of certain press reports saying that the KMML was considering a joint venture with the Tata Group. The reports are not true, he added.
Titanium industries
Mr. Karim said the Government wanted to start titanium manufacturing ventures and auxiliary industries in the State, retaining mineral sand mining in the public sector. India did not have the technology for titanium production at present. This was why the Government had initiated talks with Russia, which had the technology. He said that, during his talks with the Russian Ambassador in New Delhi recently, he had discussed the possibility of cooperation between Kerala and Russia in this sector. The media had reported that India and Russia had signed an agreement for setting up a titanium factory in Orissa. There were also reports subsequently that the unit to be set up in Orissa would buy titanium dioxide from Kerala, he said. However, neither the State Government nor the KMML had so far received any communication regarding this. Mr. Karim said Kerala had no interest in the titanium factory proposed to be set up in Orissa.
