Train enquiry system launched

S. Vijay Kumar

MADURAI: The Madurai Division of the Southern Railway has launched the National Train Enquiry System (NTES). The system, with computerised control charting, enables a passenger to know the exact location of a train.

The Additional Divisional Railway Manager, M. Suyambulingam, said here on Thursday that the railway had entered into a tie-up with the Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to offer the service. Passengers can dial `1431' for all types of information such as arrival, departure and late running of trains in Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram divisions. Live information will also be available on the website, www.trainenquiry.com.

Explaining how the system worked, he said that the data from the computerised control chart would be taken through the already existing Freight Operations Information System (FOIS) enquiry to the central server in New Delhi and then transferred to the NTES.

Mr. Suyambulingam said that passengers could now send short messaging service (SMS) to get their ticket status. The message - "PNR 10 digit number" -- should be sent to 676747 and the status report would be received in less than a minute.

The next step towards modernisation of passenger information would be the launch of Integrated Train Enquiry System (ITES) that was in the final stages of implementation. The `139' universal enquiry call centres were coming up at Gurgaon (near New Delhi), Vadodara, Kolkata and Mysore. The call centre in Mysore would cater to the southern region and local call charges would be applicable. It was also planned to provide services such as hotel and taxi booking through the call centres, he added.
