VISAKHAPATNAM: The Chittivalasa Jute Mill Workers' Union affiliated to the INTUC has opposed any move to reduce wages of workers. Union president K.V. Narasimha Raju and honorary president and district INTUC president K.S. Mohan Kumar alleged that other unions were colluding with the management and proposing to reduce the daily wages. Mr. Raju told reporters here on Thursday that the TDP Government had abolished the Jute Wage Board that had been functioning till 1984. He said the INTUC would press for constitution of the board again as it would benefit 10 lakh workers in 10 to 15 districts and ensure them good wages and other statutory benefits. The payment of wages was so poor that the apprentice workers were being exploited and sometimes being paid as low as Rs.25 a day. Dr. Mohan Kumar alleged that strikes were engineered in jute mills in the off-season period.
