POSCO: PM promises to expedite project

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday assured Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of all assistance to expedite work on the US$ 12-billion POSCO steel project.

The Prime Minister's assurance that all procedural delays and inter-ministerial issues would be addressed while protecting the State's interests came at a special meeting chaired by Dr Singh to review the progress of infrastructure projects in Orissa. The meeting reviewed the implementation of projects pertaining to sectors such as road, railway, port, power, coal, steel, mining and forest land development.

Emerging after his hour-long meeting with Dr Singh, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Mr Patnaik said: "The Prime Minister has assured all necessary help and asked to expedite work on the project."Responding to queries by newspersons, Mr Patnaik said that the land for the POSCO project would be acquired peacefully with a "humane" approach.
