New Delhi: Faced with a shortfall in paddy procurement this kharif marketing season, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday gave its nod for extending the period of giving an incentive bonus of Rs. 40 a quintal over and above the minimum support price (MSP). The MSP for common variety of paddy is Rs. 580 a quintal and for Grade `A' variety it is Rs. 610 a quintal. On a proposal of the Food Ministry, the CCEA, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, extended the paddy procurement period up to September 30 for Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. In the case of Bihar and Kerala, the period is extended till May 31. The Ministry hopes to procure five to seven lakh tonnes of paddy through this decision at an additional cost of about Rs. 30 crore.
