NEW DELHI: Candidates selected by the Resident Welfare Associations have garnered almost 5 per cent aggregate votes as well as prompted the middle class to vote in the recently held Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls. Speaking at a RWA Convention here this past week, Sanjay Kaul, president of non-government organisation People's Action, said voting was higher by residents wherever there was a candidate selected by the RWA. Also, candidates who came through the RWA process secured more votes compared to independents who did not come through it, he claimed. At the convention, members said comparison with the performance of RWA candidates in the last elections was not appropriate as new wards were formed this time. The members claimed that a 30 per cent vote from qualified middle class areas in Delhi was in fact a four times increase over the voting percentage from some of these areas last time. Members added that this was the first elections in which the middle class participated actively.
