A tie for post of JNU Councillor

Staff Reporter

History repeats itself after a year

  • Arundhati Chowdhury of AISA and Sneha of ABVP polled 117 votes
  • `JNUSU constitution prescribes a re-poll'

NEW DELHI: In what has been described as a "constitutional deadlock", there was yet again a tie for the post of Councillor at Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of International Studies here on Thursday with both the candidates getting an equal number of votes.

In the elections for the posts of a councillor each at the School of Social Sciences (SSS) and the School of International Studies (SIS) held on Thursday, there was a tie between Arundhati Chowdhury of the All-India Students' Association (AISA) and Sneha of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in the latter. Both polled 117 votes.

When the JNUSU polls were held last year, there had been a tie for both the posts. At SIS, the tie then was between AISA and Students' Federation of India.

"The JNUSU constitution prescribes a re-election in case of a tie for a post. But there is no mention of what should be done in case of a tie in a re-election," said Netajee Abhinandan, chairperson of JNUSU election committee. With Thursday's result, the students' union is now mulling over the future course of action to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, Sucheta De of AISA defeated her nearest rival Zico Dasgupta of SFI by 124 votes to become the councillor in SSS.

"As expected it was students' mandate on the issues of Special Economic Zone in Nandigram and Singur and the massacre of innocent people at Nandigram. Students have overwhelmingly come out in our support," said JNUSU general secretary Sandeep Singh, who is also a member of AISA.

Earlier in the day, polling began at 9 a.m. and 50 per cent voter turnout was recorded at the end of the day.
