BANGALORE: Basaveshwara's struggle to create a casteless society did not get adequate public support. The situation is not too different now, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said on Friday at the Basavasri awards presentation function.

The philosophy of Basaveshwara was on a par with that of Buddha and teachings on social, religious and economic issues were still relevant today, he said.

The Basavasri award for 2007 was given to playback singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and Vachana Sahitya Sri award to Sri Kumara Nijaguna Swamy of Kollegal.

Basava Vedike, Bangalore, has instituted the awards to be presented every year on Basava Jayanti. The Chief Minister said the coalition Government had allocated funds in the budget to various maths in recognition of their contributions to society.

Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadevaprasad said funds had been earmarked in the budget for setting up a music university in Mysore and a centre for Hindustani music in Hubli. He called upon all Basava Samithis to collectively organise a function on Basava Jayanthi.

C. Somasekhar, working president of the Vedike, said Mr. Balasubrahmanyam was popularising vachanas through the weekly TV programme "Ede Tumbi Haaduvenu". The 74-year-old swamiji of Kollegal had written many vachanas. He was the president of Nijagunaanubhava Mantap.
