Belgaum
Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM: The Basava Jayanti organised by the district administration in Belgaum on Friday was a low-key affair. Minister for Horticulture and district incharge Shashikant A. Naik garlanded the statue of Basaveshwara at Basaveshwar Circle near Goaves in the morning. Apart from zilla panchayat president Fakeerappa Gorbal, Congress MLA from the city Ramesh L. Kudachi, Chairman of Belgaum Urban Development Authority Shankargouda Patil, Inspector-General of Police T.G. Doreswamy Naik, retired IGP S.S. Pavate and Deputy Commissioner M.E. Shivalingmurthy, senior officials from Belgaum City Corporation and other departments and representatives of Veerashaiva organisations were present. A vachana was rendered by vocalist Gururaj Kulkarni.
Values
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Naik called up people and Government officials to inculcate the values as preached by the twelfth century reformer, who propounded the philosophy of "work is worship" and "equality." He advised the officials to show greater involvement in implementing government programmes aimed at development and welfare of the people. Later in the afternoon, Deputy Chairman of the State Legislative Council Sachidanand Khot inaugurated a procession in the presence of Mr. Kudachi, Lok Sabha member Suresh Angadi and members of Veerashaiva organisations.
