VIJAYAWADA: Highlighting the need for imparting basic training in fire-fighting to the residents of apartment complexes, Vijayawada Sub-Collector Ch. Bhanu Prasad on Friday advised the Fire Services Department not to confine awareness programmes on fire safety to a limited period but continue them throughout the year. Addressing the valedictory of the Fire Safety Week here, Mr. Prasad felt that every apartment complex should acquire basic fire-fighting equipment and earmark a water tank for emergency purposes. "The fire-fighting equipment should not become mere ornaments. They will be useful only when people have the basic technical know-how to operate those gadgets," he said.
Mock exercise
Commending the efforts of the Fire Services Department, which conducted a weeklong awareness programme in different parts of the city, Mr. Prasad said once the equipment was installed in all apartment complexes and multi-storey buildings, the department would have to extend the training to all the dwellers and staff working in the complexes. He felt that mock fire-fighting exercise at every complex at least twice a year would increase the alertness of people besides keeping the equipment in good condition. The department would have to maintain a register with the details of people who knew the usage of the equipment, so that it could use their services during exigencies, he suggested.
Right tools
Regional fire officer G. Pratap Reddy elaborated the steps being taken to prevent fire and different modes employed in fire fighting through a power point presentation. Pointing out that water could not be used to put out every fire, he said that in the case of fire caused by oil or gas, only carbon dioxide or dry chemical powder could be used. Krishna district fire officer D. Murali Mohan, Guntur district fire officer Mohan Rao, president of the Krishna District Film Exhibitors Association M. Venkateswara Rao, secretary of the Builders Association-Vijayawada Y.V. Ramana Rao and others were present.
