55 more properties sealed in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Friday sealed 55 properties in the Capital, taking to 806 the grand total of illegal commercial premises sealed since resumption of the drive on March 28.

In Central Zone, four premises were sealed, while in Civil Lines Zone sealing was carried out on seven properties.

Three properties were sealed in Najafgarh Zone and six in Rohini Zone. A total of 18 premises were sealed in South Zone, five in Shahdara (North), and six in Shahdara (South). In West Zone, six banquet halls were sealed.

Delhi continues to overdraw power

NEW DELHI: Delhi continued to overdraw power from the Northern Grid as the peak load rose to 3,374 MW on Friday. To meet the city's demand when the shortfall was 454 MW, it overdrew more than 100 MW.

While officials claimed that the load shedding was 0.098 MUs -- that is 0.14 per cent of the energy supplied -- residents in many parts of the city complained of long power cuts. Residents in some parts of South Delhi reported a two-hour power cut.

Residents of Sarai Juliana reported a three-hour power cut on Thursday, while in the NDPL area, Mangolpuri I, Pooth Khurd, Rohini Sector 2, Narela and Shalimar Bagh reported an hour's cut.

Delhi school hosts eight Bristol teachers

NEW DELHI: St. Paul's School hosted a group of eight teachers from Bristol who were here in the Capital earlier this week as part of an ongoing cultural exchange programme under the UK-India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI).

The programme highlighted the fusion of Indian and Western cultures. UKIERI aims at promoting research partnerships between different centres of excellence and developing links between schools in India and Britain for joint curriculum projects.

Bank hands over cheque to Ministry

NEW DELHI: UCO Bank Chairman and Managing Director V. Sridar on Friday handed over an interim dividend cheque for Rs. 59,93,60,000 for 2006-07 to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.

The bank's total business for 2006-07 has shown a growth of 21.47 per cent. During this period, the bank undertook several initiatives to improve its business like organisation restructuring and technology-related initiatives like visa debit cards and installation of ATMs.
