West Delhi leads the way in consumption of environment-friendly Compact Fluorescent Lamps

Staff Reporter

1.32 lakh customers have opted for CFLs in West Delhi

NEW DELHI: Energy and environment-conscious residents of West Delhi have stolen a march over their counterparts in the rest of the Capital by becoming the largest consumers of Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL).

With both environmentalists and the State Power Department pushing for phasing out the energy-guzzling incandescent bulbs, consumers are being sensitised about the merits of opting for the CFLs that save a great deal of energy and also protect the environment.

Data collated by BSES power distribution company show that 1.32 lakh customers have opted for the energy-saving CFLs in West Delhi, followed by 1.13 lakh in South Delhi. East Delhi and Central Delhi are at the third and fourth spot with over 89,000 and 18,000 CFLs being bought respectively. The survey also indicates that the 15-watt CFL, which is equivalent to the 75-watt incandescent bulb, is most popular among customers. Over 1.47 lakh 15-watt CFLs have been bought by consumers, followed by the 20-watt CFL -- which is equivalent to a 100-watt incandescent bulb.

Encouraged by the sale of over 3.5 lakh CFLs, the discom has decided to extend its buy-one-get-one-free scheme up to June 30. This is the second time that the scheme, launched on October 24, 2006, has been extended.

"The CFLs are likely to reduce the maximum power demand by around 23 MW and Delhi can save around 450 MW by simply switching to them. Greenpeace India estimates that India can save around 12,000 MW by switching to CFLs," said a BSES spokesperson.

"The scheme has exceeded all expectations," he said. "In about five months since its launch, over 3.5 lakh CFLs have been sold. Savings accruing from the CFLs sold from BSES's 52 special outlets will lead to a reduction in maximum demand by nearly 23 MW at a given point of time -- enough to power eight average shopping malls in Delhi and saving over 33 million units of electricity annually."
