Better deal for North Kerala sought

Special correspondent

KOZHIKODE: A joint campaign to speed up the development of North Kerala has been planned by chambers of commerce in the region at a meeting held here.

The campaign would focus on the need for speedy development of roads, railways, ports and airports and mobilise public opinion against hartals and other forms of agitations that disrupt normal life, K.P. Aboobacker, honorary secretary of Malabar Chamber of Commerce, said here on Friday.

Speakers at the meeting demanded a better deal for the region while making allotment of funds for infrastructure development as the region accounted for nearly half the aggregate of the amount that that flowed into the exchequer as tax.

"Both the State and Central Governments were giving a step-motherly treatment to North Kerala.

The allocation for development of the region was negligible," they said.

The chambers of commerce would hold similar meetings every month."
