Gold rush continues to hold sway

R. Sujatha

CHENNAI: On Friday evening, at the end of the two-day `Akshaya Tritiya' celebration, jewellery shops on South Usman Road, T. Nagar, played host to a sea of customers.

Even at 8 p.m., women walked into shops, visited every section, took time to make up their minds and tried out different pieces of jewellery that caught their fancy.

The cost of gold varied from showroom to showroom. Insiders said the difference in gold prices had much to do with the purity levels.

For many like Revathi, a shop assistant, purchasing a piece of jewellery is a must on `Akshaya Tritiya', irrespective of the price. "Friends get together and select the designs a month in advance. Then we buy the piece on `Akshaya Tritiya'," she said.

The most popular items every year are gold coins, finger rings and earrings. Some shops had offered customers advance bookings.

The gold rush began on Thursday and continued into Friday evening thanks to the two-day `Akshaya Tritiya' celebrations. It is observed on the third day after the new moon in the lunar month of Chithirai that signals the birth of the Tamil New Year.

Despite the rush, the crime inspector posted in the police booth on Usman Road said that no complaints of shoplifting or lost children were reported.
