Digital meters: panel to study efficacy in two cities

Staff Reporter

Bone of contention between auto unions, transport authorities

HYDERABAD: The high-level committee constituted to study the feasibility and efficacy of the auto-rickshaw digital meters will visit Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram on May 14 and 15. The committee is likely to submit its report within a month.

Joint Transport Commissioner N.V. Subba Rao said members of the committee, including those from transport, traffic, legal metrology, consumer forum and media, were selected barring those from Anti-Auto Digital Meters Struggle Committee.

"Despite requests from the department, auto unions till date have not nominated their representatives. We will go ahead with the visit after issuing a couple of reminders to the union members," he said.

Mr. Rao and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rami Reddy would lead the team.

But, Anti-Auto Digital Meters Struggle Committee does not appear to be giving up. They made a representation to the Transport Commissioner seeking change in cities to be visited and also equal representation on a par with transport and traffic departments in the panel.

According to the GO No. 240, the committee would comprise one member from Consumer Forum and a technical representative nominated by the legal metrology in addition to two representatives each from transport, traffic and legal metrology departments, Anti-Auto Digital Meters struggle committee and the media.
