KOCHI: People at large have taken a dislike to campus politics because democratic values are trampled upon in campus politics. There was a time when student politics upheld democratic values but it had all changed today, said leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Oommen Chandy here. He was inaugurating a meeting convened here for a public reception to the new Kerala Students Union (KSU) president Hibi Eden on Friday. Mr. Chandy blamed Student Federation of India's (SFI) violent tactics for the fall in the standard of campus politics and said that SFI tactics were a big setback to student politics. However, KSU should now work hard to bring back the old glory to the students' union and restore the democratic values in campus politics, said Mr. Chandy. The new KSU president has the task of building campus politics according to the expectations of the people. A peaceful atmosphere should be created in campus politics, he added. Convener of the United Democratic Front P. P. Thankachan said that district level units of the KSU should be made active for the new academic year ensuing in June. He said that the new academic year should be a time when KSU will grow to achieve its old glory. DCC president P.J. Paulose, K.P. Dhanapalan, former DCC president, P.C. Vishnunath, MLA, former MLA Luidi Luiz, M.I. Shanavaz, KPCC general secretary and Kodikkunnil Suresh, former MP, were among those who were present at the reception.
