Focus is on productivity: Rajasekharan

Bangalore: The focus of 11th Plan is on improving productivity and efficiency to meet the challenge of economic globalisation, said Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan.

Speaking at a conference on "National unity and economic development" organised by the Global Economic Council, a voluntary organisation, he said many schemes had been drawn up in the Plan to bring the deprived sections of society to the economic mainstream. The allocation for the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme would go up to Rs. 47,000 crore and benefit all the 330 districts over the next two years, he added.

The former Governor of Tamil Nadu and Assam Bhisham Narain Singh said it was important to ensure that the fruits of development reached those who did not understand what sensex and GDP mean. What matters, he said, was how much dal and rice costs on an average day.

The programme was attended by Mohammed Hafeezullah, founder-chairman, Indian Standards Educational Trust; and BJP MP H.T. Sangliana.

Forty young industrialists were presented awards by Global Economic Council at the programme.
