HYDERABAD: Preparing Hyderabad to cope with future needs, the Government has vastly expanded the jurisdiction of the urban development authority which will be now known as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). The HMDA, which will be constituted through the promulgation of an ordinance by Governor very soon, will have an area that will be nearly three times the existing size of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority. The area of HMDA will be 6,876 sq km as against 2,300 sq km of HUDA. This will be achieved by inclusion of as many as 600 villages in neighbouring districts under the jurisdiction of the new authority. Of them, 240 villages are in Ranga Reddy district, 237 in Medak, 95 in Nalgonda and 28 in Mahabubnagar. Orders giving immediate effect to the expansion were issued on Saturday. This was announced at a press conference by Information Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir and Mines Minister P. Sabitha Reddy. They said that there would be 1,003 villages spread over five district against 403 now. The area under HMDA would be third largest among the metros in the country after the National Capital Territory of Delhi (30,00 sq km) and Bangalore (8,000 sq km). Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has 4,272 sq km. S.P. Singh, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, said the expansion was planned in such a way that urban services would be delivered to an estimated population of one crore. A consultancy agency has been asked to prepare the master plan for HMDA which will be the sole authority to demarcate areas.
