Fire at power station leaves villages in darkness

Special Correspondent

KPTCL staff and local people put out fire

GULBARGA: A fire broke out at the power station in Afsalpur town in Gulbarga district on Saturday.

According to information reaching the district headquarters, one of the power cables connecting the transformer of the power station in Afsalpur town burst and caught fire. Karnataka Power Transmission Company Ltd. (KPTCL) staff and the local people put out the fire using sand and water before the arrival of Fire and Emergency Services personnel from Gulbarga city, which is about 60 km away from Afsalpur. This prevented the fire from spreading and affecting the main transformers.

Sources said that fire in the cable had not affected the power transformer and it would take at least three days to replace the damaged power cable and resume normal power supply to Afsalpur town and more than 35 villages.

Owing to the fire, the whole of Afsalpur town and more than 35 villages went without power since morning and until evening, normal power supply was not resumed.
