Two killed in bus-lorry collision

ALAPPUZHA: Two persons were killed on the spot when a private bus collided with a container lorry on the National Highway at Punnapra, near here, early on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as bus driver Sunil Kumar, 35, a native of Kilimanoor in Thiruvananthapuram, and Omana, 38, also of Kilimanoor. Five persons, including the lorry driver, Naresh, a native of Haryana, were in a serious condition. Nearly 40 persons, mostly passengers of the bus that was returning from a pilgrimage to Mookambika, also sustained injuries.

All of them were undergoing treatment at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, while one of the seriously injured was shifted to a private hospital in Ernakulam. The lorry was returning to Haryana after unloading a consignment of two-wheelers at a Bajaj showroom in Thiruvananthapuram.

The accident occurred around 6 a.m. near the Milma plant at Punnapra.
