CHRISTCHURCH: The second string Indian team faltered against the second string Uzbekistan team and lost 3-0 in the Fed Cup Asia-Oceania regional qualifying tennis tournament here on Saturday. With Tara Iyer and Ankita Bhambri taking the lead roles ahead of the tired Shikha Uberoi and Sunitha Rao, the Indian team was not able to capitalise on the relatively weak Uzbek combination of Albina Khabibulina and Dilyara Saidkhodjaeva who played in place of the seasoned Iroda Tulyaganova and Akgul Amanmuradova. The Indian girls came close to winning the doubles, but lost a thriller 13-11 in the decider. Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei beat Thailand 3-0 in the final to clinch the lone spot from the zone for the World Group `II' play-off.
The results: Final: Chinese Taipei bt Thailand 3-0 (Chin Wei Chan bt Napaporn Tongsalee 6-4, 7-5; Su Wei Hsieh bt Tamarine Tanasugarn 4-6, 7-5, 6-4; Hsuan Hwang/ Wen Hsin Hsu bt Montinee Tangphone/ Nungnudda Wannasuk 7-6(6), 6-2). Third place: Uzbekistan bt India 3-0 (Albina Khabibulina bt Tara Iyer 6-4, 7-6(3); Dilyara Saidkhodjaeva bt Ankita Bhambri 6-4, 6-4; Albina/ Dilyara bt Tara/ Ankita 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(11)). The final placings: 1. Chinese Taipei; 2. Thailand; 3. Uzbekistan; 4. India; 5. New Zealand; 6. Hong Kong; 7. Korea; 8. Kazakhstan; 9. Singapore; 10. Jordan.
