Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have commenced an exercise to have a crime and criminal mapping in a bid to plan the policing on a scientific and systematic method to prevent incidents of crime. The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan said that merely deploying police personnel would not fetch the desired results. There is a pertinent need to ensure visible policing driven by a systematic and scientific planning.
Data
The data relating to incidents of crime, profile of the offenders, time of occurrence and crime prone pockets are being compiled. With the help of experts from Chennai, a crime and criminal mapping would be done which would help the police in effective law and order and crime management. Based on the mapping, the deployment of personnel, marching of beats during day and night and lurking beats would be done besides deploying patrol vehicles accordingly. The experts are working in coordination with the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), R. Tamilchandran and his four Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of crime in all the four sub-divisions of the city. The experts would use the compiled information to draw a crime prevention strategy using the Geographical Information System (GIS). The City Police Control and its vehicles already equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS).
Synchronisation
The criminal mapping would be synchronised with the control room operations so that police teams could be instantly rushed to the scene of occurrence within the quickest possible reaction time. The team would collect the details relating to incidents of crime in the past and compile those statistics and classify them based on the modus operandi, crime and criminal profile, time and the place of occurrence so that a clear crime profile could be ascertained. The data would also help in giving clear guidelines to the officers on night rounds and special teams for crime prevention to keep tab on habitual offenders and ex-convicts.
