NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday launched the 62nd phase of the Intensified Pulse Polio Programme by administering anti-polio drops to 40 children at her residence. Expressing concern over reported cases of polio in neighbouring States, the Chief Minister reiterated her Government's commitment to making Delhi a polio-free State at the earliest.

Stating that Delhi had not reported even a single case of polio since last November, Ms. Dikshit added that the strategy to overcome the challenge of polio would be further streamlined. "The awareness programme would also be intensified and more concentration would be given to uncovered areas in slum colonies. Delhi is on the threshold of eradication of polio but occurrence of fresh cases mostly because of migration of polio-affected children from the neighbouring States has posed a fresh challenge before us,'' said Ms. Dikshit.

She noted that Delhi had always been a pioneer in the pulse polio immunisation programme that was initiated by the State Government which earned international acclaim because of its success. She exhorted parents to come forward and take their children up to five years of age for immunisation to the polio booths on Sunday.

Even after the one-day immunisation programme, designated teams would go door-to-door to ascertain any left out children and ensure administration of anti-polio drops to them.

Various international and non-government organisations along with 1,250 residents' welfare associations are assisting the drive.
