Akshaya Tritiya: cases booked against jewellers
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD:
People might believe that gold purchased on Akshaya Tritiya days might bring them good luck, but this year it proved to be unlucky for many jewellery shops in the State as the Legal Metrology Department booked nearly 150 cases against them on Thursday and Friday for various irregularities.
In Hyderabad, 15 cases were booked against shops located at Abids, Somajiguda, Saidabad, Darulshifa, Dilsukhnagar, Dabeerpura and Secunderabad.
Irregularities beginning from usage of weighing machines that did not have official stamp of the Weights and Measures department, electronic weighing machines which measured excess weight crossing the limits of permissible error to ornaments that weighed less than the weight given on the bills were practised by the shopkeepers, said a press release.
Charging extra price
Some shopkeepers were charging 11 to 14 per cent extra price, stating that there will be wastage while making gold ornaments, which is an offence under section 39 (2) of Standards of Weights and Measures Enforcement Act 1985, said Controller Legal Metrology Tejdeep Kaur Menon in the statement.
