CHENNAI: A new pharmacy at a hospital sponsored by Rotary Club of Madras Central in Nanganallur was inaugurated on Saturday by U.S. Consul-General David T. Hopper. Opening the round-the-clock facility at the Margaret Sidney Hospital, Mr. Hopper said he was impressed with the healthcare facilities being extended to the local community by the hospital. Underlining the significance of such initiatives, he said with India being a member of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS relief, $30 million had been set aside for the country for measures to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS. He appreciated members of the Rotary Club of Madras Central for setting up a good medical centre in the suburb. The 25-bed Margaret Sidney hospital has two operation theatres, an intensive medical care unit, a fully equipped laboratory, a dental unit, a diabetic unit, a physiotherapy unit and an eye care unit. Cardiology, diabetology, endoscopy, laparoscopy, nephrology, paediatrics, neurology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery and psychiatry are some fields in which it offers specialised care. Tracing the growth of the hospital, its chairman M.S. Balaji said it was established in 1971 with just four beds. It has grown into a 25-bed multi-speciality healthcare centre.
